Steamboat baseball loses 2 games against Delta

Luke Graham

— The Steamboat Springs High School baseball team lost two games Saturday to Delta.

The Sailors lost the first game, 16-5, and the second game, 14-1.

“They were, as I said, always well coached,” Steamboat manager Dave Roy said. “They do a great job. Their pitching was outstanding. We gave them some runs out of the gate. Our defense wasn’t in top shape, and we had some errors.”

Steamboat starting pitcher Alan Capistron was ushered out early in the first game because of a high pitch count, and Delta was able to tee off early and often.

“We never recovered from the first couple of innings,” Roy said. “They kept hitting the ball really well against us.”

Steamboat had just five hits in the doubleheader, led by catcher Brandon Clark’s home run in the second game and a pair of singles from Michael Yost.

“We learned a lot and matured a lot,” Roy said. “The boys never gave up and kept fighting. It was just something we couldn’t come back from.”

Steamboat (2-8 overall, 1-3 in the Western Slope League) plays at 11 a.m. Saturday with a doubleheader against Palisade.

The game will be played at Woodbury Park in Craig.

Weather postpones Sailors soccer, tennis, track games

The Steamboat Springs High School girls soccer and tennis team’s games were postponed Saturday because of inclement weather in Steamboat. The Steamboat Springs track team also was scheduled to go to a meet in Kremmling on Saturday but couldn’t because of the weather.

The soccer team was supposed to play Eagle Valley. The team next plays rival Battle Mountain at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Gardner Field. The tennis team next plays at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Aspen. The track team is scheduled to compete Saturday in Eagle Valley.

No makeup dates for the postponements have been made.
