Steamboat’s Kerry Lofy starts big mountain ski team

Joel Reichenberger

— Steamboat Springs professional skier Kerry Lofy has started his own big mountain ski team.

Lofy, who had at one time had a big mountain program with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, has about a dozen skiers from across Colorado on the Colorado Free Ride Lofy team.

There are eight skiers from Steamboat and a few from across the Front Range.

The organization is set up as a nonprofit.

The team has competed in three competitions and has one left in Taos, N.M.

“I hope to grow it pretty big,” Lofy said. “I totally could see it up to 50 kids. I think there is a big market for it. The kids have an option if they burn out at 12 to 15 years old at any racing or freestyle program. What better alternative than big mountain?”

The Winter Sports Club got rid of its big mountain program.

The team meets on weekends for training or competitions.
