— Patient, resolved and powerful, the Steamboat Springs High School volleyball team didn’t disappoint Saturday, when it finally opened its home schedule after a long couple of weeks on the road.

The Sailors quickly adjusted to their friendly home confines, downing Summit in three games, 25-18, 25-21 and 25-21.

“Maybe it wasn’t easy, but it was good,” senior Alex Feeley said. “We kept our energy up, and that can be hard if you lose a certain amount of points in a row.”

That ability to avoid streaks — credited by Feeley to energy, but by the stat book in part to her 15 powerful kills — proved decisive as each of the three games was close down the stretch.

Steamboat got big afternoons from Feeley; junior Gabby Heron, who finished with eight kills; and junior Mikaila Jegtvig, who had five kills and another five blocks.

Junior Maggie Crouch, meanwhile, provided three kills and played a big role in helping keep the score close in the third game before a Steamboat surge put the Sailors in front.

“We hit some bumps in the road, but we didn’t allow that to spiral on us and allow it to be four, five, six or even more points,” Steamboat coach Wendy Hall said. “That’s what allowed us to win three straight. Every set was close enough to where if we had allowed a run, we would have dropped the set. Eliminating those runs can be the difference in the outcome, and this was a perfect example of that.”

The match bumped Steamboat to 4-3 on the season, but Hall said she was hoping this win was more telling than any of the previous matchups.

It was the team’s first home game. It was its first league competition, and it was its first best-of-five match this season.

“This was definitely the most meaningful match we’ve had,” Hall said. “I was really proud of the way the girls handled things.”

The Sailors return to action Tuesday with a trip to play Eagle Valley.

There, Feeley said they’ll need to be better in a number of facets.

“We have a lot to improve on, but we’re confident,” she said. “I know we can do that.”
