Steamboat football stumps Summit

Joel Reichenberger

— When you score your first touchdown on a 60-yard run on an audible fake punt, you know things are going well. On Friday night, the Steamboat Springs High School football team rode that big, early play from Joe DeLine to a big late-season win against Summit, 36-13.

“That play gave our kids some good momentum and they carried it through,” Steamboat coach Lonn Clementson said. “We’re proud of the kids. We had lost three in a row, but it’s nice to see the kids are staying together and playing as a team.”

Zach Holm was back under center for the Sailors and that made a big difference, allowing other players to shift back to their more natural positions.

He scored once while senior tailback Mitch McCannon scored three touchdowns, starting with a punt return early, following up on DeLine’s 60-yard scramble.

“Special teams was working really well,” Clementson said. “We were able to make some stops and get good field position. The offense scored, and we were able to hang on and preserve the win.”

The win bumps Steamboat to 4-5 on the season. They’ll play for that .500 record next week at home against Glenwood Springs, which enters 5-4 after a loss Friday night to Rifle.

“We have a chance to win more football games than we’ve won in the last few years,” Clementson said. “We’re going to do everything we can to prepare.”
