Winter Sports Club U16 boys Alpiner Cole Puckett had a solid final day of the Rocky Mountain/Central Division championships in Steamboat two weeks ago, and now he's eyeing a follow-up performance next weekend at Nationals. Puckett will use the upcoming week for final preparations before competing at historic Sugarloaf, Maine, for the first time in his life.

His club teammate Mary Kate Hackworthy, another U16er, landed her spot on the start list for the CanAm Championships in Apex, British Columbia. Hackworthy had a top-20 finish in Apex, Winter Sports Club Alpine Director Caroline Lalive said, and her U14 boys teammate, Nicolas Richeda, will be at Mt. Tremblant in Quebec this coming week for his CanAm races.

This past week was a big one for Richeda and the boys and girls U14 Winter Sports Club squad. Winter Park played host to the U14 Rocky Mountain/Central Divisional Alpine championships, with racers competing in super-G, giant slalom, kinder kombi and slalom.

Both Cooper Puckett and Richeda took home top-10 finishes in the perfect race conditions. Puckett was 10th and ninth in the GS and fourth in slalom. Richeda followed it up with a 10th in super-G, seventh and fifth in GS as well as fifth in kinder kombi. Cooper Puckett's races techincally qualified him to compete at CanAms with Richeda in a few days, but he can't compete because of his age, club coach Erik Gilbert said.

On the club's girls side, Riley Smith took 15th in super-G and 20th in GS. Sequoia Anstine had a solid finish to the week after placing 16th in kombi and 17th and 19th in slalom.

Last weekend was also the final time for Winter Sports Club U12 Alpiners to show out at Powderhorn in Mesa.

Jordan Simon grabbed gold in the boys GS and silver in the boys slalom, the club's top placing times. Alden Wade made his presence felt in the boys slalom behind Simon with a seventh- and 10th-place showing.

Ryli Adrian and Emilia Cooper held their own in the girls GS as Adrian snagged fourth and Cooper took ninth and 14th. Sydney O'hare was also 10th and 20th in GS and fourth and 12th in the slalom. Adrian wasn't far behind with a sixth and eighth in slalom.

As a unit, Steamboat U12 racers finished third overall for the Team Cup for their multiple top-10 marks.
