Community Agriculture Alliance: Celebrate the planet

Every year in Steamboat Springs, Earth Day comes and goes without much fanfare due to our late spring break and the mass exodus to warmer climes and drier trails after the mountain closes.

But you can still pay tribute to the planet during Yampa Valley Sustainability Council’s monthlong Every Day is Earth Day celebration.

A full calendar of Earth Month events can be found at yvsc.org/earthday.

Community Agriculture Alliance

This weekly column about agriculture issues is written by area farmers, ranchers and policymakers. It publishes on Fridays in the Steamboat Today. Read more columns here.

Following are some of the highlights.

A to Z Recycling Online Guide

The new, up-to-date 2017 recycle guide is now online, with even more recycling options. View the comprehensive Routt County recycle guide online at yvsc.org.

Third annual School Waste-Free Lunch Challenge

Local schools have been participating in a national data collection project to measure cafeteria waste. The campaign to reduce lunchroom waste culminates with the start of spring break. For information about how to pack a waste-free lunch for yourself and your children, visit yvsc.org/waste-free-lunch.

ReTree Steamboat planting

ReTree Steamboat 2017 planting dates are set. The first planting event is set for April 21 at Hayden Elementary School.

Three additional ReTree planting events are scheduled through the summer and fall. Locations include Elkhead Reservoir State Park, Workman Park near Sixth Street on the Yampa River and Stagecoach State Park.

Yampa Valley Sustainability Council is looking for volunteers to help at the Elkhead Reservoir and Workman Park planting events. For more information and to sign up to volunteer, visit yvsc.org/retree.

Reusable shopping bag giveaway

From noon to 1 p.m. April 22 at City Market, volunteers hand out free Yampa Valley Recycles Green Bags to the first 50 customers, along with a “Remember your Bag” hanger and information about the environmental impacts of plastic bags.

Give your stuff away day

Help your neighbors and yourself, while diverting waste from the landfill. On May 13, take your valuable, but unwanted, possessions to the curb for others to take for free.

Guidelines are as follows.

• No trash, recyclables, illegal or dangerous items.

• No food, drugs, chemicals or weapons.

• Set out only safe, valuable items. Items that are not taken should be taken to a local donation center. Visit yvsc.org for resources.

Talking Green

As the residential watering season kicks off, join us for an interesting and informative Talking Green, “Residential Water Efficiency: Not a Drop to Waste” at 5:30 p.m. May 23 at the Steamboat Springs Community Center. Water conservation educator Kevin Reidy, with the Colorado Water Conservation Board will tie local water conservation actions into the larger statewide picture.

Information will range from the big picture of the water supply-demand gap in Colorado to what individual actions residents can take in their daily lives. For more information visit our website yvsc.org
