— The Steamboat Springs High School girls lacrosse team is in the midst of the best season in the history of the program, and Thursday, the team’s aptitude paid off in a way it rarely has in the past for the Sailors.

With a big second-half lead playing at home against Fruita Monument, Steamboat did what good teams do, subbing in younger players and working the ball on offense to give new faces opportunities.

It resulted in six different Sailors scoring — a record for the team — and in a 17-10 win.

“I was very pleased,” coach Betsy Frick said. “The level of teamwork we had was a quantum leap over what it’s been in the past.”

Steamboat got eight goals from Lucy Shimek, five from Riley Schott and one each from Alicia Mitchell, Thyme Zuschlag, Julia McCarthy and Cat Read.

For each of the four who scored one goal, it was the first of their season, and for Read and McCarthy, it was the first of their career.

Combined with solid goaltending from both Ava Thiel and Mattie Knutson, who each had two saves, the team cruised to a win that put them up to 10-3 on the season.

Next up for the Sailors is spring break, then, May 1, the day the players return to school, a huge league game against Battle Mountain, then, the final home game of the season, May 3 against Eagle Valley.

“We have a chance to finish out our season on a winning streak,” Frick said. “We can’t take either of those games lightly, but they should be solid matches that could go either way.”
