Sailors get key wins against regional rivals
March 17, 2017
Steamboat Springs — The regional tournament is still six weeks away, but the Steamboat Springs High School girls tennis team won some valuable confidence for that event at a Thursday triangular.
The Sailors traveled to play Vail Mountain and Aspen and came away with two wins — tight wins, but important ones, as both schools will be in Steamboat's regional.
"Those were really important head-to-head wins, especially for seeding at regionals," coach John Aragon said. "I'm really glad it went our way, but we still have a lot of work to do to finish strengthening our team."
The Sailors beat Aspen 5-2, then beat Vail Mountain 4-3.
Mae Thorp, a freshman playing at No. 1 singles, was one of the players who stood out the most for Aragon.
She won against Aspen's Ayla Potamkin 6-0, 6-0, then against Vail's Skyler Barr 6-2, 6-0.
"It was a little windy, but she adapted really well and hit high-percentage first serves and didn't make many unforced errors," Aragon said.
The No. 1 doubles team, with Emmie Thompson and Natalie Simon, also shined. They won against Aspen 6-0, 6-3 and Vail 6-1, 6-2.
"It's the first time they've played together at No. 1 doubles, and I was really impressed with their chemistry," Aragon said. "It was great to see the girls not just having fun, but working really hard for points."
Two other Steamboat entries won both their matches on the day. Maddie Thompson did it at No. 2 singles, winning 6-0, 6-1 against Aspen and 6-4, 6-3 against Vail. Then, the No. 4 doubles team of Mariah Walker and Morgan Sauerbrey did it, winning 6-3, 6-3 and 6-0, 6-2.
Soria Rabanal and Christian Hathaway also won at No. 2 doubles against Aspen.
Next up for the team is a trip to Vista PEAK Preparatory school next weekend for a tournament.
