— There were factors working against the Steamboat Springs High School girls lacrosse team before the first goal was scored Thursday, as the Sailors played at home against Aspen.

Steamboat was missing six girls, as they were doing double duty and acting in the high school musical, “Grease,” which opens Friday.

No swapping of skirts — poodle for lacrosse — was likely to change the outcome of this one, however, as Aspen truly burned up the quarter mile and cruised to an 18-3 win.

“This was not our strongest, 100-percent showing,” Steamboat coach Betsy Frick said, “but, Aspen’s a super-skilled team, and they do an awesome job of short, accurate passes and moving the ball down incredibly fast. It was a good look for us at how lacrosse should be played.”

The Skiers showed off a huge diversity of scoring talent in securing the win, as 10 different players scored.

Steamboat’s Ava Thiel grabbed a season-high 13 saves, but Aspen’s flurry of shots amounted to plenty of goals.

Charlotte Howie led the team with four, while Jordan Fox had three. Katie Yocum had four assists.

“We had some plays we’ve been working on, and the girls went right into them,” Aspen coach Jessica Owings said. “It was a nice, cohesive team effort.”

Freshman Riley Schott had two goals for Steamboat, and Lucy Shimek had one.

The loss was the first of the season for Steamboat, now 5-1. The Sailors next play Monday at Eagle Valley.

Aspen, 3-2, heads out for a long road trip, playing Monday in Carpinteria, California.
